One of the reasons we listen to trance is its emotional qualities: it can pump us up, make us shed a tear, or allow us to momentarily lose our self-consciousness and slip into a sense that is often described as euphoria.
Some trance enthusiasts disagree about the place of vocals within the genre, with some asserting they enhance the emotional forces while others argue that it serves as a distraction and an appeal to more popular audiences.
But regardless of your own opinions, this mix is one of the more powerful trance tracks we’ve heard before here on TranceMusicBlog.com. Oceanlab is an English vocal trance group that includes the three members of Above and Beyond as well as vocalist Justine Suissa.
The original mashup was by Myon & Shane 54.
But the appeal goes beyond just the audio, as this version is accompanies by a very moving video. Above and Beyond were initially inspired by reading about the Detroit Urban Farms project, as described on the video’s Youtube page:
“Initially inspired by an article written by journalist Paul Harris on Detroit’s urban renewal city farms in the Guardian newspaper, the video for Above & Beyond and Gareth Emery pres. OceanLab ‘On A Good Day (Metropolis)’ captures the song’s essential meaning of triumph over adversity through the powerful, visual narrative of the Georgia Street Community Collective and their determination to make a better, brighter life for their local community.”
It was directed by Steve Glashier, and in addition there’s a making-of feature that shows the story behind the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bylrwd13SAw
