Good trance entices you with its elaborate textures. A new listener might say it’s a genre fueled by continuous hypnotic repetition, but it’s more about the ebbs and flows as melodies are added and subtracted that make your hair stand as a song builds up to a climax.
This is the feeling you get when listening to Dave Neven‘s remix of Arnej’s Strangers We’ve Become, and the familiar haunting vocals of Josie add another great element to the sensory journey that is this song.
First off, Trance Music Blog got some biographical info on Dave Neven. His story is one of a longtime passion for DJing and a growing career that is soon to lead to a change in scenery:
I was born and raised in the great city of Chicago. I lived in Florida for 3 years during my early teen years where I grew an interest in DJing, specifically dance music, with influences such as DJ Icey, Paul Oakenfold and Paul Van Dyk.
I have been DJing for about 12 years now, and I’ve been producing for about 8. With very little musical background I have taught myself everything. Studying music theory, watching tutorial after tutorial, and even practicing on the piano. What started as a hobby is now an obsession. I eat, sleep, and breathe music. I have just recently decided to quit my full time job and move out to sunny Los Angeles to pursue my music career.
I’m at that point in my career where I’m “taking the bull by the horns” and trying to break through. Just recently I was featured on Giuseppe Ottaviani’s GoOnAir radio show for the “Hot Or Not” track of the week. (episode 070). It was replayed the following week with a vote of 95% “Hot” I’m a resident DJ at one of the biggest clubs in Chicago (Castle Nightclub; formerly know as Vision Nightclub).
I have been DJing there for roughly 4 years now. I have had a couple singles released and a few remixes but nothing BIG yet. I have opened and closed for several big artist/DJs including Andy Moor, Ronski Speed, KhoMha, Richard Durand, Ferry Corsten, John O’callaghan, Max Graham, Christopher Lawrence, W&W to name a few.
With mixes like this, that make you marvel at the beautiful synth melodies while still wanting to bust a move to the punchy bass, the future looks bright for Dave Neven.
Arnej is a trance producer and DJ from Canada. Strangers We’ve Become (Intro Tech Dub) appeared on Armin Van Buuren’s State of Trance 2008 alongside another song The Return, which helped earn him Armin’s “Producer of the Year” that year. The track was also released as an EP with four mixes on the Armind label (which is under the umbrella of Armada Music).
Trance vocals run in the family for Josie, the vocalist, as she is the sister of Jaren who has provided vocals for numerous trance hits including Unforgivable (featured on the same ASOT 2008 as Strangers We’ve Become) and Man on the Run.
